Applying
Selection criteria
This page sets out how mentors evaluate applications for Elixpo project ideas. The same criteria apply to every applicant. In 2027 we plan to mentor one contributor, so every accepted contributor gets two mentors' full attention.
Criteria
- Understanding of the problem. You explain the problem in your own words and identify the code involved.
- Prior contribution. We assess the quality of a small contribution to the idea's repository and how you responded to review. Quality matters more than size or number.
- Communication. You ask clear questions, report progress and act on feedback.
- A realistic plan. Milestones that fit the idea's size, a midterm checkpoint, and a testing plan that matches the idea's success measures.
Process
- Mentors read every proposal and assess it against the criteria above.
- Mentors interview shortlisted applicants about their proposal and their contribution.
- Elixpo ranks the proposals on the official GSoC website. Google allocates contributor slots and announces the accepted contributors.
We do not select on the proposal alone, and we do not select on the number of pull requests opened.
After the decision
- A selected contributor starts the community bonding period with both mentors, agrees milestones and a communication plan, and then begins coding. The contributor guide describes each stage.
- If you are not selected, your merged work remains part of the project and you are welcome to keep contributing.
Grounds for rejection
- A proposal written by AI. See the AI policy.
- Fabricated evidence, such as claimed contributions or results that do not exist.
- A breach of the Code of Conduct.
